Botox can be injected into specific muscles to temporarily relax them resulting in an inability to wrinkle the skin overlying the treated muscle. Botox is only helpful for dynamic wrinkles, also known as "wrinkles in motion." It is not as effective on static wrinkles, "wrinkles at rest," but prolonged use of botulinum toxin (Botox) may help prevent wrinkles in motion from becoming wrinkles at rest.  For static wrinkles dermal fillers are best suited.  However, our cosmetic doctor will help you decide the best method or combination to help you get rid of unwanted lines and wrinkles.

What Is BOTOX ®?

How Does Botox Work?

Botox blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles. The injected muscle can no longer contract, which causes the wrinkles to relax and soften.

It is most often used on forehead lines, crow's feet (lines around the eye) and frown lines. Wrinkles caused by sun damage and gravity will not respond to Botox.

How Is the Procedure Performed?

The procedure takes only a few minutes and no anesthesia is required. Botox is injected with a fine needle into specific muscles with only minor discomfort. It generally takes three to seven days to take full effect and it is best to avoid alcohol at least one week prior to treatment. Aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications should be stopped two weeks before treatment as well in order to reduce bruising.

How Is It Different Than Other Products?

BOTOX ® blocks nerve transmission to relax the underlying muscles beneath the skin. The effect is not permanent, lasting about six months.

How Is BOTOX Injections Different Than Dermal Fillers Like Restylane?

BOTOX ® is a protein that relaxes the muscles that create lines whereas Restylane is a filler agent that fills in the lines.  Botox is for dynamic lines which move or are caused due to facial expression.  Static lines that are permanent can be treated by dermal fillers

Are Botox Injections Approved By The FDA?

BOTOX ® Cosmetic was approved by the FDA in April 2002 for cosmetic use.

Where Is It Administered?

BOTOX injections have been traditionally used to treat frown lines, forehead creases and crow's feet around the eyes.

How Long Does an Injection Take?

BOTOX injections for wrinkle treatment  take approximately 10 minutes to administer.  However, your total consultation time will be around 20-30 minutes.

What Should I Do After Receiving an Injection?

No exercising or lying down for two hours after injections is recommended. Do not excessively touch the area that was treated for the first 4 hours after injection.

How Long Does It Last?

The effects last for up to four to six months. 

How Often Should I Have Treatments?

CosMedocs recommend to schedule treatments about every four to six months to help maintain a consistent appearance in the first year. Then on treatment can be delayed by a few months each time as your wrinkles have become lighter.
