Hair Loss & Confidence - London Hair Clinic

Hair loss, what does it mean to us? For some, it means combing your hair everyday in the morning, ensuring that every strand is properly placed to hide as much of the bald spot as possible, for others, it's trying and testing any new product that 'guarantees' a 'naturally looking head'. Hair loss has been known to increase anxiety, frustration, and even depression in some people.

But now, its time to stop trying, and start getting the results you want. What you want is a simple, cost effective and tried and tested solution. That's what we are about, we don't do magic, we do proper researched medical science.

There are many factors that can result in hair loss. Genetics, Physical, psychological, emotional even environmental factors contribute to hair loss. It is therefore important, that your treatment is personal and individual to the causes, and of course your concerns.

Once you meet our highly experienced Hair Restoration Specialists for a consultation they can best advise you about the best course of action. The treatment will differ according to the cause and the extent of hair loss.

Let's take a look at some of the treatment options that we have now at our London Hair Transplant Clinic.

Treatment Options:
There are many treatment options available, however we specialize in the most effective and proven methods.  Depending on the extent of baldness and the causes, our Hair Restoration Specialist will provide you with a personal Hair Restoration Plan tailored to your causes and concerns, advising you of the realistic expectations of the treatments.

Non-Surgical:
Non surgical treatments for hair loss are becoming increasingly popular, however it is important to remember that the majority of hair loss products advertised have no clinical evidence to support their ‘miracle cure’ claims.

Hair loss can occur because of a number of reasons, and it is important to have the treatment based on the cause.  Our treatments are medically proven to prevent hair loss and promote the growth of hair.

We can treat for a variety of causes including but definitely not limited to the ones listed here.  We primarily suggest coming and seeing our Hair Specialist so that he can advise you on the cause and offer an individualized treatment programme.

  • Traction Alopecia
  • Chemical Damage
  • Hormonal
  • Genetic
  • Alopecia Areata

Surgical
The Procedures

Hair transplant surgery has been around for over 50 years, and in time has been developed to a level where it gives your head a natural appearance.  Many different types of procedures are practiced with great results and depending on the extent of hair loss and desired results our experienced surgeons will advise which type of procedure will be appropriate for your condition.  The two most common are:

Strip Surgery Method or Micrografting
Hair transplant surgery is basically the transplant of hair from healthy patches to the bald spots.  This is typically done in a ‘horse-show’ pattern; from here hair is removed and placed on the bald spots, where they will grow as normal hair.

Hair transplant can be seen as the re-arranging of healthy hair into the bald areas.  A simple way of looking at it is by dividing the areas into donor and recipient sections.  The donor area in Men is typically what is known as the ‘horse-shoe’ pattern, which goes along the sides and back of your head.  Hair is taken from these areas and then placed into the bald patches, or Recipient areas.

Hair placed in the new areas will behave in the same way as hair in the donor areas such as the back and sides.  However, it should be noted that depending on the amount of baldness, and the type, sometimes more than one surgery is needed to get the required results.  This depends on the type of baldness, the progression of baldness, whether your hair is curly or thin, and even the colour.

FUE – Follicular Unit Extraction Method
FUE is an exciting and innovative procedure that only a handful of surgeons are expert in.  Our Hair Restoration Specialist is highly trained and experienced in this method and is a member of the International Society for Hair Restoration Surgery.

FUE is a less invasive method than the Strip Surgery Method, as it can be achieved without a scalpel and results in no scars.  This is an ideal procedure for men who like to keep their hair short, however the best results can be achieved in cases of less advanced hair loss.

Because it is minimally invasive, there is very little down time, most clients can have the treatment done under local anaesthetic and return to work the next day.

So, what is it?

FUE is a method of restoration in which health hair follicles are extracted from areas of the body with an abundance of hair, to areas on the scalp where hair loss or thinning has occurred.  These areas can be the back of the head, chest or even the back.

In addition to being a unique method of its own, it can also be used to perfect the Strip Surgery Method usually in advanced hair loss.

However, FUE does have its limitations.  There must be enough Donor area to meet the requirements of the receiving area.  Also it may not always be possible to extract hair from the body as it may be quite different than the hair on your head, specifically in the case of Afro-Caribbean hair.

Miracle Cure?
Hair transplant surgery is not a Miracle cure, but gives you the results you want.

However it is important to have realistic expectations from your sessions.  In general, this depends on how much hair is available to transplant, and how large the area is where the hair will be transplanted.  A high number of follicular units, or hair strands give better results, as well as having multiple sessions.

Male Hair Loss

Hair loss is mostly common to men. It is causes by the increased sensitivity to male sex hormones (androgens) in certain parts of the scalp, and can usually be noticed to have a hereditary link.

Some areas of the scalp are more sensitive to Androgens, while other areas may be less. The hormones make hair follicles shrink, eventually, becoming so small that they cannot replace lost hairs. The follicles are still very much alive, however are unable to replace the loss of hair.

This condition usually starts in men aged around 20 – 30 and usually follows a typical pattern. The most commonly used classification for male hair loss is the Norwood classification. At least 98% of males with hair loss can be categorised by using the Norwood Classification, so it's definitely worth taking a look at:

The Norwood Classification

Female Hair Loss

However, Hair loss is not limited to just men, the most common form of hair loss in men, is also common to women, Androgenetic Alopecia. In simpler terms, this is the inherited sensitivity to the effects of male hormones (androgens) on the scalp and hair follicles. This can cause thinning of the in women in the same way as it does to women; however women rarely develop a receding hairline.

However unlike men, hair loss in women can begin at any age through 50 and later, and may not have the obvious hereditary link. Hair loss and hair thinning in women can be associated with many events, such as pregnancy, or an illness.

Some women with high hairlines may desire a lower hairline to complement their facial characteristics.

The pattern of balding is not the same for women as it is for men, therefore for women the Ludwig Classification of Female Baldness can help in classifying the different types of baldness
