Hyperhidrosis Treatment With BOTOX®™

Unfortunately, topical and oral medications, iontophoresis, and surgery have not proven to be efficacious in the majority of patients. In fact surgery can result in compensatory excessive sweating in other parts of the body in about 30-40% of patients.  This is not a known complication of  hyperhidrosis treatment with botox injections.  The Botox binds to the nerves that controls sweating in the skin, and reduces sweating in the area for 6 – 12 months without having compensatory effects. Clinical studies have shown that this treatment reduces the amount of sweating by 75 - 80% times. A course usually lasts 6 – 8 months.  In order to ensure you obtain the best result CosMedocs administer 100 units (50 units per side) for underarm & palmer excessive sweating which is doubling the standard dose offered.

What is Botox and how does it work?

Botox is a very pure preparation of a protein, Botulinum toxin type A. When small doses are injected into the skin, Botox  blocks the actions of the nerves that supply the eccrine glands; this prevents the glands from producing sweat. Botox blocks the nerve endings but over about 6-12 weeks new nerve endings grow to replace them.

What happens during treatment?

Using a very fine needle, a small amount of a solution of Botox is injected into 10 to 15 places about 1.5 - 2 cm apart and spread evenly in each area.  A course of botox excessive sweating treatment (hyperhidrosis) takes about a total of 30 minutes.

Does It Hurt?

Only minimally. Because the skin of the armpit is thin, Botox hyperhidrosis treatment there is barely felt. The needles used are extremely fine, and they themselves are not felt much but the Botox injection itself stings lightly.

How quickly does it work and how long will the effects last?

You should notice some change for the better within a week of your treatment. Different people have different responses to treatment. In a clinical trials, sweat production was reduced by more than 90% in two weeks with botox hyperhidrosis treatment. 

Is Botulinum Toxin Safe?

Hyperhidrosis is a chronic disorder of excessive sweating that can affect any body part, including the underarms, the palms, the soles of the feet, and the face.

The efficacy and patient satisfaction of Botox® for hyperhidrosis treatment is considered to be excellent. Until now, most treatments for excessive sweating were often ineffective, short acting or had significant risks. For those suffering from excessive sweating, Botox treatments give them new hope where previous therapies have failed before.

Botox® hyperhidrosis treatment (excessive sweating) was approved in the United Kingdom in July 2001.

By blocking the release of acetylcholine, which activates the sweat glands, botox injections can relieve excessive sweating, a life-altering procedure for those suffering from the embarrassing ailment, and were approved for use under the arm in September 2001.

Previous treatments for excessive sweating for the underarms — which is known as axillary hyperhidrosis—were often ineffective and short-acting, or were associated with significant risks. Studies have shown that 80 to 95% of patients respond to one treatment session (Naumann 2001; Lowe 2003; Naumann 2003). Along with a decrease in perspiration, injections can improve quality of life (Campanati 2003) and decrease body odour (Heckmann 2003) for up to 7 months (Naumann 2003). A long-term study has shown that side effects are minimal, and repeated injections over 16 months are safe and efficacious, with 50% or greater reduction in sweating seen in 96% of patients after the first treatment (Naumann 2003).
