Hair transplant surgery has been around for over 50 years, and in time has been developed to a level where it gives your head a natural appearance. Many different types of procedures are practiced with great results and depending on the extent of hair loss and desired results our experienced surgeons will advise which type of procedure will be appropriate for your condition. The two most common are:
Strip Surgery Method or Micrografting
Hair transplant surgery is basically the transplant of hair from healthy patches to the bald spots. This is typically done in a ‘horse-show’ pattern; from here hair is removed and placed on the bald spots, where they will grow as normal hair.
Hair transplant can be seen as the re-arranging of healthy hair into the bald areas. A simple way of looking at it is by dividing the areas into donor and recipient sections. The donor area in Men is typically what is known as the ‘horse-shoe’ pattern, which goes along the sides and back of your head. Hair is taken from these areas and then placed into the bald patches, or Recipient areas.
Hair placed in the new areas will behave in the same way as hair in the donor areas such as the back and sides. However, it should be noted that depending on the amount of baldness, and the type, sometimes more than one surgery is needed to get the required results. This depends on the type of baldness, the progression of baldness, whether your hair is curly or thin, and even the colour.
FUE – Follicular Unit Extraction Method
FUE is an exciting and innovative procedure that only a handful of surgeons are expert in. Our Hair Restoration Specialist is highly trained and experienced in this method and is a member of the International Society for Hair Restoration Surgery.
FUE is a less invasive method than the Strip Surgery Method, as it can be achieved without a scalpel and results in no scars. This is an ideal procedure for men who like to keep their hair short, however the best results can be achieved in cases of less advanced hair loss.
Because it is minimally invasive, there is very little down time, most clients can have the treatment done under local anaesthetic and return to work the next day.
So, what is it?
FUE is a method of restoration in which health hair follicles are extracted from areas of the body with an abundance of hair, to areas on the scalp where hair loss or thinning has occurred. These areas can be the back of the head, chest or even the back.
In addition to being a unique method of its own, it can also be used to perfect the Strip Surgery Method usually in advanced hair loss.
However, FUE does have its limitations. There must be enough Donor area to meet the requirements of the receiving area. Also it may not always be possible to extract hair from the body as it may be quite different than the hair on your head, specifically in the case of Afro-Caribbean hair.
Hair transplant surgery is not a Miracle cure, but gives you the results you want.
However it is important to have realistic expectations from your sessions. In general, this depends on how much hair is available to transplant, and how large the area is where the hair will be transplanted. A high number of follicular units, or hair strands give better results, as well as having multiple sessions.
