What is it?

Laser Sweat Ablation is an innovative treatment to stop excessive underarm sweating (axillary Hyperhidrosis). The treatment is a straight forward surgical procedure with local anaesthetic. It uses a laser to destroy and remove the eccrine or sweat glands, providing long term, significant reduction in sweating, while causing minimal damage to the surrounding skin. Excessive sweating is embarrassing, uncomfortable and can have a severe impact on self confidence. With the advances of modern surgery, it is not something that you have to live with. CosMedocs London Laser Sweat Ablation treatment is a safe, highly effective way to control excessive underarm sweating, leaving you free to enjoy life.

Who’s it for?

Laser Sweat Ablation is specifically for people who suffer from axillary Hyperhidrosis or excessive underarm sweating.
While it is difficult to accurately measure how much more somebody with axillary Hyperhidrosis experiences underarm sweating compared to others, if you have the condition you may need to change your clothes several times a day, shower more frequently and spend large sums of money on deodorants. Most importantly, you may feel that your sweating restricts your enjoyment of everyday life, affects your self-confidence and even has impact on the activities you participate in.
If you feel self conscious in public, withdraw from social events or worry about romantic relationships because of excessive underarm sweating, our London Laser Sweat Ablation treatment could be a great option for you.

What can I expect from treatment with Dermal Fillers?

Before treatment

You will attend a comprehensive consultation in which you will be able to discuss you condition with your physician. During the consultation, you’ll be asked questions about your medical history; including any treatments you may have tried in the past to prevent excessive sweating. An important part of the initial consultation is a sweat test, which is used to calculate how much you sweat in one hour. This simply involves placingsome cotton wool pads under your arms for an hour – you can relax with a tea or coffee while you wait. After one hour, a member of our nursing staff will remove the cotton wool and note your hourly sweat volume.
imgFollowing the results of your consultation, your physician will discuss whether Laser Sweat Ablation is a good option for you and you will have a chance to answer any questions you have concerning the procedure. If both you and your physician agree that the treatment is right for you, you will be asked to sign a medical consent form. Finally, a member of our nursing staff will take your measurements for your compression garment - this will help hold the dressings in place and aid the healing process after the procedure.

The procedure
On the day of your treatment, you will be asked to change into a theatre gown and slippers. We have secure locker facilities in which you can store your clothes and belongings and you are invited to keep the key with you if you prefer.
In the operating room, you will be introduced to our staff and given painkillers, tablets that reduce bruising and antibiotics. After a few quick checks of your personal details, you will be asked to lie down comfortably on the operating table.
Before the procedure begins, local anaesthetic is used to completely numb the whole area. Your physician will make two small incisions in the skin in your underarms, typically no bigger than 5mm. The laser is then directed at the dermis, destroying the eccrine glands which cause the body to sweat. These dead glands are easily removed using a gentle suction technique.
Finally, the area will be treated with local anaesthetic and the compression garment and dressings will be put in place. When the procedure is finished, you can change back into your own clothes and you’ll be invited to rest a while in our waiting rooms until our staff are happy that you are ready to go home.

After treatment
It is important that you wear your compression garment for 48 hours after your treatment.
At CosMedocs London Sweat Ablation clinic we find that most of our patients need very little recovery time and can get back to normal life within a few days of the procedure. It is common to experience some bruising and some patients choose to take some mild pain relief pills in the first few days following treatment, although you may find that you do not need to.
We ask you to come back for a follow up appointment one week after treatment to check on the healing progress, and once more six weeks after the initial procedure to repeat the sweat test and measure the overall effectiveness of the treatment.

Results

Laser Sweat Ablation is the only treatment that works be actually destroying and removing the eccrine glands (the glands which produce sweat), providing highly effective prevention of excessive sweating at its root. The treatment is still fairly new. However, in the seven years that it has been used there has yet to be a patient for whom Laser Sweat Ablation has not provided significant, long-term results.

FAQs

Are there any risks associated with Laser Sweat Ablation?

CosMedocs are constantly working to improve standards of customer care and we strive to reduce the risk of complications at every stage of every treatment we offer. However, as with all surgical procedures there are some possible risks associated with Laser Sweat Ablation:
• Infection – this is a small risk in any surgical procedure.
• Bruising of the underarm area
• Some mild, localised pain or discomfort
• Light scarring in the underarm area
• Decrease in sensation in the underarm area

Aren’t the sweat glands important for cooling down?

It is true that sweat glands play an important role in helping the body control and regulate its temperature. However, because Laser Sweat Ablation is specifically targeted at removing sweating glands from the underarms only - a tiny area of the body - it is a perfectly safe and will not stop your body from cooling down or impact your overall health in any way.

Will Laser Sweat Ablation make me sweat more from other areas of the body?

It is possible that removing the sweat glands from the underarm area may lead to a slight increase in sweating from other areas. However, because the underarms are only 1-2% of our total body surface area, a decrease in sweating in this area will only lead to tiny, perhaps barely noticeable increases elsewhere.

Does removing the sweat glands cause Breast Cancer or prevent Breast Cancer treatment?

No. The eccrine glands targeted by Laser Sweat Ablation are completely separate to the Lymph Nodes associated with Breast Cancer. Removing these glands does not cause Breast Cancer, or impair treatment of Breast Cancer in anyway.
