Administration (FDA) has cleared Silk’n™ for home-based removal of unwanted hair under the direction of a physician. The efficacy and safety of Silk’n™ has been tested in multi-center clinical study at clinics in the United States and other global locations. An average hair reduction of 60% was monitored three months after three bi-weekly treatment sessions were completed. No adverse effects were noted in the course of the study, and the users of Silk’n™ recorded an extremely high level of satisfaction with the device and their results.

Who Can Use It?
Those with a naturally dark skin color cannot use Silk’n because burns, blisters and/or changes in skin color can result. Also, those in whom burns, blisters occur after prolonged sun exposure without using a sunblock.
Dark hair responds the best to this laser treatment. Shades of brown will also respond to the laser, but typically require more treatments. Because the laser is targeting dark pigment (melanin)- white, gray, or blond hair will not benefit from using the system. Red hair isn’t totally ruled out here, but possibly may benefit from hair removal treatments.

Silk’n vs. Tria
Comparisons of the two leading laser hair removal home devices, Silk'n and Tria, shows a number of important differences between the two devices.
Results & Area Coverage : Users and physicians who have used Silk'n side by side with the Tria hair removal device are saying that Silk'n has better results than Tria and Silk'n also covers more areas with less time than the tria. Featuring a patented Home Pulsed Light (”HPL”) technology, Silk'n has a spot treatment size of 2cm by 6 cm, compared to the smaller spot size of 1 cm diameter of the TRIA, a diode laser. This means that Silk'n covers more area with less time than the TRIA.
Level of Discomfort: Additionally, users have found Silk to have less discomfort compared to Tria.
Ease of Use: As importantly, Silk'n has greater ease of use due to the fact that Tria runs on battery so a patient can only have power for a limited number of pulses, whereas the Silk'n runs on regular household current with an AC cord and unlimited power.

R. Stephen Mullholland, a leading cosmetic plastic surgeon in private practice in Los Angeles, California and Toronto, Canada believes that compared to Tria, Silk'n is “not as painful and the effective treatment size [with Silk'n] is probably about 300% larger, so it is much faster.” Dr. Mullholland, who has tested the two systems, also points to the advantage of Silk'n running on regular household current with unlimited power, unlike the battery-powered Tria which provides power “for only a limited number of pulses, so you cannot treat an entire lower leg on one charge.”
Good Morning America Compares Silk'n & Tria
In November 2008, leading morning television show Good Morning America's Becky Worley put the two devices to the test and used Silk'n on one leg and TRIA on the other for two and a half months. The results showed that Silk'n worked remarkably better than TRIA, which takes longer to deliver results.
“If I had to qualify the differences in hair growth for me, I'd say that after two weeks of not shaving either leg I have 70 percent less hair on the Silk'n leg and about 30 percent less hair on the Tria leg,” said Worley. “I haven't counted the hairs, but I have twice as much hair on the Tria side as I do on the Silk'n side.”

What to expect during a Silk'n Treatment
For many people, using Silk’n™ may be their first experience with a light-based device designed for self-treatment. Silk’n™ is simple to use, and treatments go by quickly. During treatment it is normal to experience:
1. A Flash of Light – The bright light of Silk’n™ will not harm the eyes when applied to non-facial sites, and special eye-protection is not needed when doing Silk’n™ treatments.
2. A Fan Noise – The cooling fan in Silk’n™ makes noise similar to a hairdryer. This is normal.
3. A Pop Sound with Each Pulse – When a pulse of light is activated, it is normal to hear a subtle pop sound simultaneously with the flash of light.
4. Moderate Pressure of the Applicator – This is necessary and helpful for placement of adjacent pulses of light.
5. Sensation of Warmth and Tingling – During each pulse of light it is normal to feel a mild sensation of warmth and tingling from the light energy. Remember it is important to always use low energy settings for initial treatments.
Results:
The hair removal results for each person can be varied for many reasons. Hair color, density and location on the body all have an impact of the ultimate result. Environment may also play a role.
