With ageing, natural formation of lines and wrinkles occur on our forehead due to the constant movement of forehead muscle which gives an ageing appearance. In addition to giving an ageing look, the horizontal lines on the forehead or the vertical lines that appear between the brows, can give an angry, unpleasant, tired and stressed appearance to facial profile. These lines can be removed through a browlift surgery.
Brow lift corrects the skin wrinkling and loss of tone that causes sagging of eyebrows and hooding of upper eyelids. Brow uplift softens the deep creases across the forehead. It reduces the horizontal frown lines at the top of nose and the vertical lines between brows. The result is a more relaxed and refreshed appearance. The procedure is often performed along with a facelift or other surgical facial cosmetic treatments.
Types Surgical approaches towards Brow Lift
There are three surgical approaches that are usually used for achieving browlift. Primarily, browlift is done for droopy and flat eyebrows that are lifted by removing skin from forehead or by tightening it that also helps to improve wrinkles. Surgeons can hide the incisions through these approaches.
Coronal Brow Lifts
In this surgical browlift approach, surgeon makes an incision in the hairline from ear to ear on top of the head. The forehead is lifted by the surgeon to the new position having a scalp on front of the incision that overlaps the scalp just behind it. The scalp which overlaps is removed and the remaining scalp is stitched together. Some of the muscles in forehead are weakened deliberately to remove the horizontal lines on forehead. As the sensory nerves located in the top of head are also involved in this, temporary itching or numbness may occur after the procedure.
Hairline Brow Lift
This approach surgical browlift approach is usually used with patients having high receding hairline. During this procedure, the incision is created in between the top of forehead and at starting point of hair line. When the skin is removed, the hairline is not pulled backwards. This technique can bring about dramatic improvements within the horizontal forehead creases. However, it may leave a visible scar along the hairline. It is an ideal technique for patients who like to wear bangs.
Endoscopic Brow Lift
In this browlift surgery, a tiny camera is used that is mounted on the end of an endoscope. For this surgery, 4-6 tiny incisions are made behind the hairline and the skin is shifted backwards on the head. Some surgeaons may make use of tiny screws fixed in the skull bone to provide temporary support to the skin until it completely heals. To adjust the skin to its new position, screws are fixed with stitches. It is important to note that brow lift will not help in removing the crow's-feet or have any effect on the puffiness or bulging that may appear in the upper or lower eyelids. Some of the horizontal lines on forehead are likely to return back in people having expressive faces. People having visible signs of ageing can have an Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) combined with browlift or complete facelift surgery.
Cosmetic issues treatable with brow lift
The browlift treatment can also cause effective improvement in the following cosmetic issues;
- Tired or angry appearance
- Drooping brows
- Horizontal lines appearing across the forehead
- Deep furrows present between the brows
- Heavy upper eyelids
Ideal candidates for Surgical Browlift
Majority of the patients who opt for browlift are between the ages of 40 to 50 years because during this age the signs of ageing become most prominent with appearance of brow lines, wrinkles or creases along the forehead and sagging eyelids. In some cases, hereditary can also cause wrinkles and lines during 20s or 30s which can be corrected through browlift.
There are certain risk factors that are related with the browlift surgery but are not only limited to these.
- Anesthesia related problems
- Infection in sutures
- Loss of hair at the site of incisions
- Swelling & Bruising which may remain for few weeks
Temporary or permanent numbness on the top of the scalp can result from the coronal brow lift surgery. In Endoscopic lifts, such numbness is not an issue. In less than 1% of patients, the paralysis of the forehead due to damage to nerves may also occur. If after the surgery, the new brows position seems to be higher up from one side, then it may be in accordance with the previous asymmetry.
Results and Recovery
The surgical procedure takes almost 2 to 3 hours to complete. the patient may need to stay a night at the medical facility. After the browlift surgery, the bandages are usually removed after one or two days and stitches can also be removed after almost 2 weeks. The time of recovery varies with the individual patients however the patients after few weeks the can resume their normal routine activities. After complete healing which may take 4-6 weeks, the eyebrow lift surgery gives beautiful, natural and attractive results. Brow lift eliminates the appearance of lines on the forehead, raises the eyelids and gives an overall younger, energetic and pleasant facial appearance. The results of surgery last for about 5 to 10 years.
